Soering attorney: Investigator got it wrong
(by Angela Hatcher, The News & Advance, March 8, 2011, Link)
Jens Soering's attorney has sent a letter to Governor Bob McDonnell, in response to a letter sent to the governor by the lead investigator of the Haysom murders.
In a letter dated February 26, Major Ricky Gardner with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office asks McDonnell to deny clemency to Soering. Gardner details what the Commonwealth considers, "...the facts in the case that the jury heard during Jens Soering's three week trial in June 1990".
In a rebuttal letter dated March 7, Soering's attorney Gail Ball claims Gardner's letter contains 19 factual errors or omissions.
Ball writes that while the results of 2009 DNA tests do not prove Soering's innocence, they establish reasonable doubt.
Soering is serving two life terms for the 1985 murders of Derek and Nancy Haysom. He is asking the governor for parole and deportation to Germany.
